Summer Aquatic Program Swim Skills

Starfish (6 months - 4 years with parent):

  • Getting comfortable with teacher, pool, & class
  • Getting wet, going under water
  • Parent and child learn ride positions /with kick
  • Blowing bubbles
  • Submerging and opening eyes under water
  • Back float
  • Jumping in
  • Digging (Small arm strokes)
  • Safety skills
  • Games and songs

Dolphin I (4 years & up): for the children who are more apprehensive in the water or who have never had swim lessons before. Children must understand they cannot leave steps without the instructor.:

  • Back & Front float
  • Kicking Technique
  • Crawl stroke introduction
  • Underwater retrieval
  • Underwater swimming
  • Safety skills

Porpoise (4 years & Up): Ability to go underwater without fear; basic understanding of crawl stroke.:

  • Focus on correct crawl stroke arms and breathing
  • Introduce back crawl stroke
  • Underwater retrieval and swimming
  • Safety skills

Shark (Intermediate to Advanced Swimmer): Swimmer must be able to perform crawl stroke the length of the pool alone:

  • Review and perfection of crawl stoke
  • Back crawl stroke
  • Elementary back stroke
  • Side stroke
  • Breaststroke
  • Treading water
  • Safety skills
  • Perfection of skills
  • Distance swimming
